Week 8 -- 1st Area -- 1st Companion -- Hesperia, CA

JULY 28, 2014 -- 12:39PM

The weeks keep on flying by faster and faster.  Last week was a really good week.  We had a ton of lessons and all of our investigators are doing great.  Richard got baptized and was confirmed the next day and it was an amazing experience.  It was really cool having Richard get baptized on my birthday!  I ended up having to fast on my birthday because no family had signed up, so, we fasted and it was pretty hard.  Also, on my birthday, we helped a family move.  The only bad thing was after we were done moving and went to leave, my back tire was flat.  We took the tire off and found out that the patch we'd put on blew.  So, my bike is under repair right now.  We are having more bike problems and they never seem to stop.  My companion's front tire was flat this morning.  We should, if everything goes right, have another 11 baptisms this transfer .   I love all of you guys and miss you.

Love,

Elder Niceler

Week 7 -- 1st Area -- 1st Companion -- Hesperia, CA

July 21, 2014 -- 5:25pm

Last week was full of miracles.  Our ward is doing a 40 day fast, one family in the ward will fast for one day of the forty.  We ask them to fast for us and missionary opportunities and we've seen a ton of miracles.  A less active family wants us to start teaching there kids so that they can get baptized and sealed to them in the temple.  The sad thing about this family is that they're making this big push now because the dad got diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  Richard was finally able to get the marriage license and they got married on the 19th.  He also brought a friend to church and his friend now wants to get baptized.  We've seen so many miracles just in the first week of the 40 day fast.  They really work.  We had a ton of problems with our bikes this week.  We had the zone leaders take us to the bike shop three days in a row so we could get a new inner tube.  It was pretty cool most of the week here it was only really hot at the beginning of the week.  I miss all of you guys so much.  Thanks for all of the prayers.

Love,

Elder Niceler

P.S.  I'll send you a picture of Richard and us after their marriage next week.

Week 6 -- 1st Area -- 1st Companion -- Hesperia, CA

July 14, 2014 -- 11:44am

I loved the pics of Mary Alice! Seems like she changed a ton.   Me and my companion didn't get transferred so we're in the same area for at least another six weeks.  A lot of areas at the end of this transfer are going to be getting shut down because a lot of missionaries are now heading home.  We should be getting mini iPads sometime, they said the earliest is November.  To be honest me and Elder Bowman have been really bad at getting up on time.  So, we never have time to work out.  Our work out usually turns into us biking everywhere.

July 14, 2014 -- 12:09pm

Well, I get to stay in my area for another six weeks.  Our week wasn't too good.  We had the hardest time reaching our daily goals every single day.  We always seemed to have something get in our way.  But, a lesson with a less active made up for our pretty terrible week.  We went to Curt's house and it was going how it always does . . .  he was complaining to us about his foot that has been giving him problems for the past six years.  Elder Bowman then asked him why he got baptized and that brought out a concern.  He told us that he never received an answer.  So, that got him to talking about how he never receives answers.  So, Elder Bowman read 1 Nephi 3:7 (in the Book of Mormon -- "And it came to pass that I, Nephi, said unto my father: I will go and do the things which the Lord hath commanded, for I know that the Lord giveth no commandments unto the children of men, save he shall prepare a way for them that they may accomplish the thing which he commandeth them.")   After reading that I talked about our move to St. Louis.  Then he asked me why I decided to serve a mission.  I told him that I decided to serve because I received an answer and he started to cry and then said, "See you guys receive answers.  I don't."  I then felt prompted to share my story as to how I got my answer.  While I was sharing Elder Bowman felt prompted to share some verses in Alma 15 (in the Book of Mormon)  where  Alma and Amulek go and heal Zeezrom.  Elder Bowman read those verses and while he was reading them Curt received an answer.  He told us that he could still hear Elder Bowman reading but there was another voice that said that is why they're here.  We had earlier asked him if he wanted a blessing but he told us he was fine.  But, after that we gave him a blessing and we then left.  As we were leaving he thanked us for never giving up on him.  Well, the rest of our week wasn't great.  Saturday we went to someones house to help her paint and build some stands and that took us way longer than we expected.  We didn't reach any of our goals that day.  Saturday was also super stressful because they were making transfer calls that day and it was taking forever.  My zone only lost two missionaries.  We lost one of our zone leaders and one of our district leaders.  Please pray for my zone.  We had some issues with some missionaries causing problems and we're worried that the new zone leader will have some big problems with the other zone leader.  Thanks for everything you guys do.

Love,

Elder Niceler

Week 5 -- 1st Area -- 1st Companion -- Hesperia, CA

 JULY 7, 2014 -- 5:15PM

Last week was pretty good.  Our week started off pretty bad; we had two appointments with less actives fall through and when that happened we had no idea what to do.  So, we called our ward mission leader and he gave us someone to go and visit.   We went to their house and they weren't home.  So, we ended up going back to our apartment.  We did our nightly planning and talked for a bit about the people we're teaching.  We went on exchanges Tuesday night to Wednesday night.  Since we don't have any other Elders in our district we are only able to go on exchanges once a month with our Zone Leaders.  I stayed in my area and Elder Fullmer was the zone leader that went with me.   He's a Utah State Champion in wrestling.  I asked him what college he wants to go to, after his mission,  to wrestle for.  He told me that wrestling in high school was enough for him and he doesn't want to wrestle at the collegiate level.  We set goals that night to contact 10 people and to be diligent in our work.  We were able to contact 7 people and 4 of them were solid potentials that we are going to drop by this week to see if they want to take the lessons.  We also had an amazing lesson with Steve, one of our progressing investigators, who is ready to get baptized but he is dragging his feet with committing to do it.  Elder Fullmer gave an amazing testimony on faith from Alma 32, and I finished the lesson by sharing Moroni 10: 3-5.  I pointed out that one thing the scripture says is to pray to our Heavenly Father to know if it is not true.  And right after I said that you could tell that what I said was one thing that Steve needed to hear.  You could also really feel the spirit.  We finished by reading all of Moroni 10: 3-5 and then I bore my testimony on it.  He should hopefully be getting baptized really soon.  Our 4th of July was really good.  We got fed for all three meals and they were all really good.  We had to be in by six so we were extremely bored having to be in our apartment forever.  We did our weekly planning and then we laid down until we fell asleep.  Saturday pretty much went to waste the way things played out.  We ended up only being able to visit one less active and then teaching a recent convert.  After that we had to go to our dinner appointment that was was at 4pm, which was really what through our entire day off.  After dinner we went back to our apartment to get some things done.  A couple of hours after we had been back at our apartment we heard four gun shots go off and we were a little freaked out, then we heard another six.  After the six we were freaking out.  We ended up calling our Mission President and we explained our situation and he just told us to stay in our apartment.

Hi Mary Alice,

I love the pictures that you painted for me and I have them laying out.  Did you guys get the letters I sent?  I can't wait to get home and be able to watch you play the piano.  Sounds like you have a ton of fun playing basketball with Eli, and that's great to hear that you beat him a least once.  Of course, you guys went to The Arch once I left.  It sounded like you had fun.  I miss you so much!!!!!!!!

Love,

Elder Niceler

P.S.  I'm going to put the picture mom took of you on my planner for next transfer.  Everyone that sees my planner is going to see you on my front cover.

Also for the 4th of July, a member in the ward has a 1947 Dodge Fire Engine.  Every year he takes it for a drive and you can stand in the back.  Elder Bowman and I were able to ride on the back with a few other of the guys family members.

JULY 7, 2014 -- 5:32PM

Hey so these pictures of me and Elder Bowman aren't in our apartment.  They're in another Elders' apartments.  I haven't really taken any other photos.  I'll make sure to take a picture of my bike.   It's pretty hard remembering to take pictures.

Love,

Elder Niceler

Week 4 -- 1st Area -- 1st Companion -- Hesperia, CA

June 30, 2014 -- 2:54pm

This last week was really hot, it got into the hundreds a few times and it wasn't fun biking in that.  We just hit up (stopped by) a bunch of less actives.  We ended up just visiting with most of them and shared a spiritual thought with a couple of them.  One family vented to us for an hour about their family problems. We had a really good lesson with Steve (one of our progressing investigators).  We helped him with some of his hang ups.  But, to be honest he's ready to be baptized.  He's just dragging his feet and slowly getting there.  We had a really good lesson with Richard, we taught him about the Book of Mormon.  This was something that Elder Bowman and I realized we needed to teach him.  We realized we hadn't and we were pretty shocked.  The Book of Mormon is the most powerful tool that we have when we teach people.  It's something that we need all our investigators to have a testimony of because everything in the church hangs all on the Book of Mormon.  This goes for members of the Church as well.  We need to have a testimony of the Book of Mormon.  I've been reading the Book of Mormon lately, trying to read through it, and I've realized that it really is true and as I've read it I felt my love for others grow, as well as my love for Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ grow.  At the end Richard felt embarrassed to ask a question, he asked us how to pray.  We told him that it teaches how to pray in the pamphlets (that we gave him) and he got so excited.  So we taught him.  What I learned from him there was that we all need to be excited to pray.  It's important to be excited because it's our time to talk to our Heavenly Father.  Praying so much on my mission has been a blessing.  I've realized how important prayer is.  I've seen as I pray for others how much they change, as well as how much my love for them grows.  I miss you guys so much.  I keep all of you in my prayers.

Love,

Elder Niceler
